The five rounds of a Call Break match

Thirteen tricks, five times over, and the scores carry forward. That last part is what makes it a game rather than five games.

Five rounds. Thirteen tricks each. Scores accumulate.

The highest total after the fifth round wins, and because scores carry forward, a failed call in round one is still costing you in round five.

How a match adds up

A worked example, four players across five rounds:

A five-round Call Break match
RoundCalled WonScoreRunning total
1343.13.1
243−4−0.9
32221.1
4353.24.3
54448.3

Round two is the one to look at. A call of four missed by one trick costs the whole four, not the difference — that is the rule that separates Call Break from its ancestors. See Call Break scoring.

Extra tricks are worth a tenth of a point each, which is why round four scores 3.2 rather than 5.

Why the fifth round plays differently

In rounds one to four, a conservative call protects a total. In round five, protecting a total only helps if you are ahead.

A player two points behind going into the last round has to call high and make it. The call itself becomes a strategic decision rather than an estimate, and that is the part of Call Break experienced players talk about. See Call Break bidding.

Why five

Five rounds is convention, not rule. It is long enough that one lucky deal does not settle the match, and short enough to finish in twenty minutes.

Some groups play seven, and a few play until someone reaches a target score. Since Call Break has no governing body — like several of its other rules — agree it at the start.

What carries between rounds and what does not

  • Carries: the score, and nothing else.
  • Does not carry: the cards, the deal position, the calls. Each round is dealt fresh from a full shuffled deck.

So a run of bad hands is genuinely bad luck rather than a pattern, and a good round four says nothing about round five.

Common questions

How many rounds are in a Call Break game?

Five. Each round deals all fifty-two cards and plays thirteen tricks, and the scores accumulate across all five.

How is a Call Break match won?

The highest cumulative score after five rounds wins. A bad round can be recovered from; a bad fifth round cannot.

Can you go negative in Call Break?

Yes, easily. Missing a call loses its full value, so a failed call of four costs four points, and two bad rounds can put a player well below zero.

Why five rounds and not more?

Five is long enough that one lucky deal does not decide the match, and short enough to finish in twenty minutes. It is convention rather than rule — some groups play seven.

Does the dealer change each round in Call Break?

Yes, the deal rotates. Which direction it rotates varies: Pagat documents the traditional game as anticlockwise, while most apps deal clockwise.

What happens if two players tie in Call Break?

Most groups play one extra round. There is no governing body, so agree it before the match rather than at the end of it.
