When to split in Blackjack

Two rules never change. Everything else depends on one card you can see.

Always split aces and eights. Never split tens, fives or fours.

Those four rules cover most of the pairs you will be dealt. The rest depend on what the dealer is showing.

Why aces are the clearest case

Two aces held together are a soft twelve — one ace counts eleven, the second immediately drops to one. Twelve is a poor total.

Split them and each ace begins a hand at eleven. There are sixteen ten-value cards in a 52-card deck, so roughly 31 percent of the deck turns either hand into twenty-one.

One weak hand becomes two strong ones. Nothing else on the table produces that swing.

Why eights are the hardest to accept

Sixteen against a dealer showing ten feels hopeless, and splitting into two eights feels like doubling a bad position.

It is not. Sixteen is the worst total in Blackjack — too low to win, too high to draw to safely. Two hands starting at eight are both live. You are not doubling a loss, you are replacing one hand that is nearly lost with two that are not.

Why never tens

Twenty wins the great majority of hands. Splitting it discards a near-certain win in exchange for two hands that each start at ten.

This is the most common mistake at a Blackjack table, and it comes from thinking that two chances must be better than one. Two chances at a worse hand are not.

What splitting costs

Splitting doubles your commitment for the round — each new hand carries the same stake as the original. That is why it is only correct when both resulting hands are genuinely better than the single hand you started with.

See doubling down for the other action that increases your commitment, and when it is worth it.

Common questions

Which pairs should you split in Blackjack?

Aces and eights always. Tens, fives and fours never. Every other pair depends on the dealer's upcard.

Why do you always split aces in Blackjack?

Two aces together are a soft twelve, which is a weak hand. Split them and each ace starts a new hand at eleven, and roughly a third of the deck turns either into twenty-one.

Why should you never split tens?

Twenty is already a winning hand. Splitting turns one hand that wins most of the time into two hands that each start at ten and might not.

Can you split any pair in Blackjack?

You can split any two cards of the same rank. Most tables also allow splitting two ten-value cards of different ranks, such as a king and a jack, though doing so is a mistake.

What happens after you split in Blackjack?

Each card becomes the first card of a separate hand, and each receives a second card. You then play both hands independently.

Can you split again after splitting in Blackjack?

Most tables allow re-splitting up to three or four hands, but split aces usually receive one card each and cannot be re-split. This is a house rule worth confirming.

Should you split eights against a ten?

Yes, even though it feels wrong. Sixteen is the worst total in the game, and two hands starting at eight each are better than one hand at sixteen.

Practise the pairs

Splitting eights against a ten only feels right after you have done it a few times. A free Blackjack game download for Android.
