Short answer. There are 22,100 possible three-card hands. Only 52 of them are trails — about 1 hand in 425.

Roughly three hands in four are high card and nothing else.

Every hand, counted

Three cards drawn from 52 gives C(52,3) = 22,100 distinct hands. Every one of them falls into exactly one of the six categories, so the counts below add up to 22,100 exactly.

This is where the ranking comes from

The hand order is not a convention someone picked. Read the combinations column from top to bottom and it rises every single time: 52, 48, 720, 1,096, 3,744, 16,440. The rarer a hand is, the more it beats.

Which explains the one thing that catches out poker players. In five-card poker a flush beats a straight. Here it is reversed, because with only three cards there are 1,096 colours against 720 sequences — the sequence is genuinely the harder hand to make, so it ranks above the colour.

The reason is structural. A colour just needs three cards to share a suit, and there are 286 ways to pick three cards from any thirteen-card suit. A sequence needs three specific consecutive ranks, and there are only twelve runs in the deck.

What this means at the table

  • Three hands in four are high card. If you are waiting for a made hand before committing, you will fold most of the night.
  • A pair is already above average. At 16.9 percent it is the most common made hand, and it beats roughly 74 percent of deals.
  • A colour is a strong hand. Only about 5 percent of hands reach colour or better.
  • A trail is once a session. At 1 in 425, a six-player table sees one roughly every seventy deals.

None of this tells you what any specific opponent holds. It tells you what the deck can produce, which is the part that never changes.

Common questions

What are the odds of getting a trail in Teen Patti?

There are 52 possible trails out of 22,100 possible three-card hands, which is 0.24 percent, or about 1 hand in 425.

How many possible Teen Patti hands are there?

22,100. That is the number of ways to choose 3 cards from a 52-card deck, written as C(52,3).

Why is a sequence rarer than a colour in Teen Patti?

There are 720 possible sequences and 1,096 possible colours. A sequence requires three specific consecutive ranks, while a colour only requires three cards to share a suit, and there are far more ways to do the latter.

What is the most common hand in Teen Patti?

High card, by a wide margin. 16,440 of the 22,100 possible hands contain no combination at all, so roughly three hands out of four are nothing but a high card.

What are the chances of getting a pure sequence in Teen Patti?

48 hands out of 22,100, which is 0.22 percent or about 1 hand in 460. It is actually rarer than a trail, but ranks below it because trails are rarer still at 52 hands.

How often do you get a pair in Teen Patti?

3,744 hands out of 22,100, or 16.94 percent - roughly one hand in six. It is the most common made hand and beats about 74 percent of deals.

What percentage of Teen Patti hands are a colour?

4.96 percent, or 1,096 hands out of 22,100. Reaching colour or better happens in only about 5 percent of deals, which is why a colour is a strong holding.

Is Teen Patti a game of luck or skill?

The cards are pure chance, but the betting is not — see blind and seen in Teen Patti. The blind and seen structure means the same three cards can be played several different ways, and choosing when to pack is where the decisions live.
