Teen Patti glossary
Every word you will hear at the table, what it means, and when it is used.
The six you actually need first. Boot is the compulsory opening stake. Blind means you have not looked at your cards; seen means you have, and must then bet double. Chaal is to bet and continue, pack is to fold, and show is paying to compare the last two hands.

| Chaal | चाल | To place a bet and continue in the hand. The word simply means 'move'. A blind player's chaal is one or two times the stake; a seen player's is two or four. |
| Pack | पैक | To fold. You give up the hand and lose everything already staked. Also called 'fold' at mixed tables. |
| Show | शो | Paying to compare hands when only two players remain. Both hands are revealed and the stronger one takes the pot. |
| Sideshow | साइडशो | A private comparison between two seen players. The requester asks the previous seen player; if accepted, the weaker of the two packs immediately. It can be refused, and it cannot be asked of a blind player. |
| Pot | पॉट | The total money staked in the current hand. It starts as the collected boots and grows with every chaal. |
| Stake | दांव | The current amount in play for a single bet. It rises as the hand progresses and doubles when a seen player raises. |
| Trail | ट्रेल | Three cards of the same rank — the strongest hand in the game. Also called trio, set or three of a kind. |
| Pure sequence | प्योर सीक्वेंस | Three consecutive cards of the same suit. The second-strongest hand type. |
| Sequence | सीक्वेंस | Three consecutive cards of mixed suits. Also called a run or a straight. |
| Colour | कलर | Three cards of one suit that do not form a run. Called a flush in most other card games. |
| Pot limit | पॉट लिमिट | A ceiling agreed before play begins. Once the pot reaches it, all remaining players must show and the hand resolves immediately. |
| Muflis | मुफलिस | A variation in which the hand ranking inverts completely and the lowest hand wins. |
| Hukam | हुकुम | A variation in which one suit is nominated as trump and outranks all other suits. |
The three that cause arguments
Blind versus seen
This is the pricing mechanism the whole game runs on. A blind player pays the stake; a seen player pays double it. Once you look at your cards you can never go back to blind, so the decision is one-way — and a player who stays blind for several rounds is paying half as much as everyone else to see the same hand play out.
Sideshow refusal
A sideshow can be declined, and refusing carries no penalty. What it does carry is information: a player who refuses is usually protecting a strong hand they do not want revealed early. Some tables limit each player to one sideshow request per hand. Agree this before the first deal.
Pot limit
Not every table plays with one. When it exists, the hand stops the moment the pot hits the ceiling and all remaining players show. Without it, two stubborn players can run a single hand indefinitely — which is exactly why most home games set one.
Common questions
What does chaal mean in Teen Patti?
Chaal means to place a bet and stay in the hand. The word literally means 'move' in Hindi. A blind player's chaal costs one or two times the current stake; a seen player's costs two or four times.
What does boot mean at a Teen Patti table?
Boot is the word for the compulsory opening stake. You will hear it called the ante at mixed tables. It is the only money that goes in before anyone has seen a card.
What is the difference between a show and a sideshow?
A show happens when only two players are left and settles the whole hand. A sideshow is a private comparison between two seen players while others are still in the hand, and only eliminates one of the two.
Can a blind player request a sideshow?
No. A sideshow can only be requested by a seen player, and only against the previous seen player. A blind player has not looked at their cards, so there is nothing to compare.
What does pack mean in Teen Patti?
To fold. You give up the hand and forfeit everything already staked — the Teen Patti glossary covers the rest of the table vocabulary. At mixed tables people often say fold instead, and the two mean the same thing.
