Blackjack terms
Sixteen words. Most of a Blackjack table's vocabulary comes up in the first ten minutes.
The two that cause the most confusion: a soft hand holds an ace still counting eleven, so it cannot bust on the next card. A stiff hand is a hard 12 to 16 — too low to win, too high to draw to safely.

The words worth understanding properly
Soft and hard is the distinction that changes decisions. A soft 17 and a hard 17 are the same number and completely different hands — one cannot bust on the next card, the other very likely will. See soft and hard hands.
Stiff names the problem range. Hard 12 to 16 is where most losses happen, because both available actions are bad and you have to choose one anyway.
Upcard is the word that should be in every sentence about strategy. It is the only information you have about the hand you are trying to beat.

What does hit mean in Blackjack?
Take another card. You may keep hitting until you stand or go over 21.
What is a stiff hand in Blackjack?
A hard total of 12 to 16 — too low to win against a strong dealer card, too high to draw to without a real chance of busting. It is the hardest range in the game.
What is the difference between an upcard and a hole card?
The upcard is the dealer's face-up card, visible from the start. The hole card is face down and revealed only after every player has finished.
What does push mean in Blackjack?
A tie. You and the dealer finish on the same total and nothing changes hands.
What is a natural in Blackjack?
An ace with any ten-value card on the first two cards. It beats a 21 built from three or more cards and pays the blackjack rate.
What is soft 17 in Blackjack?
An ace counted as eleven plus a six. Whether the dealer draws on it or stands is the single most important house rule at any table.
