Doubling down in Blackjack
One extra card, twice the commitment, and no third chance. The trade only works on a handful of totals.
Double on hard 11 almost always. On 10 when the dealer shows 9 or less. On 9 when the dealer shows 3 to 6.
You receive exactly one card and the hand ends. There is no hitting afterwards.
The totals worth doubling
| Your total | Dealer shows | Double? |
|---|---|---|
| Hard 11 | Anything except an ace | Yes |
| Hard 10 | 2 to 9 | Yes |
| Hard 9 | 3 to 6 | Yes |
| Soft 16 to soft 18 | 4 to 6 | Yes |
| Hard 12 or more | Anything | No — one card can bust you |
| Hard 8 or less | Anything | No — one card rarely finishes the hand |
Why eleven is the strongest double in the game
Two things line up at eleven. No single card can bust you — even an ace only takes you to twelve. And with sixteen ten-value Blackjack cards in the deck, roughly 31 percent of draws land you exactly on twenty-one.
You are committing double on a hand that cannot get worse and often gets very good. That combination does not occur anywhere else.
The dealer's card matters as much as yours
Doubling on ten against a dealer showing six is strong. Doubling on ten against a dealer showing an ace is not — same hand, opposite decision.
The reason is the same one that drives when to hit or stand in Blackjack: a dealer showing 5 or 6 must draw from a weak total and busts often, while a dealer showing ten is probably already near twenty. Doubling commits you to a single card, so it needs the dealer to be in trouble.
Soft doubles are underused
A hand where the ace still counts eleven cannot bust on the card you receive. Doubling a soft 17 against a dealer showing five costs nothing in bust risk — the worst case is the ace drops to one and you keep a modest total.
See soft and hard hands for why the ace behaves this way.
The one card rule
Doubling gives you a single card and stops the hand automatically. You cannot hit again even if the card leaves you on twelve.
That is the entire cost of the action, and it is why doubling on low totals is wrong: eight plus one card is usually still a hand that needed another card.
Common questions
How does doubling down work in Blackjack?
You double your commitment for the round and receive exactly one more card. The hand then stops automatically, whatever total you finish on.
When should you double down in Blackjack?
On a hard 11 almost always, on 10 against a dealer showing 9 or less, and on 9 against a dealer showing 3 to 6. The common thread is a strong total against a weak dealer card.
Can you double down on any hand in Blackjack?
Most tables allow doubling on any two cards. Some restrict it to totals of 9, 10 or 11. Confirm before you play, because it changes several correct decisions.
Can you hit after doubling down?
No. Doubling gives you exactly one card and the hand ends there. That single-card limit is the whole trade.
Why is 11 the best hand to double on?
No single card can bust it, and roughly a third of the deck is worth ten, so a large share of draws land you on twenty-one.
Should you double a soft hand in Blackjack?
Sometimes. Soft 16 to soft 18 against a weak dealer card is a reasonable double, because the ace protects you from busting on the one card you receive.
Is doubling down worth the risk?
It is the only action that increases your return without adding bust risk beyond one card. Used on the right totals it is the most profitable move available.
