Pure sequence in Rummy
The one combination you cannot fake — and the reason most beginner rounds end badly.
Definition. A pure sequence is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, with no joker used anywhere in it.
Without at least one, your declaration is invalid and you lose the full point value of your hand — not the difference, the whole thing.

The rule that catches everyone
The ace works at both ends of a run — A-2-3 and Q-K-A are both valid. What it cannot do is join them. K-A-2 is not a sequence. The run stops at the ace in either direction.
The joker exception worth confirming
If the wild joker rank is a seven and you are holding 5♠ 6♠ 7♠, that seven is standing in its own natural position in its own suit. Most tables count this as pure, on the grounds that nothing is being substituted for anything.
But not all of them do, and there is no universal ruling. Ask before the first deal, because it is the single most common Rummy dispute and it always surfaces at the worst possible moment.
What an invalid declaration costs
Declaring without a pure sequence does not cost you the difference. It costs you every card in your hand, counted at face value with face cards at ten each, up to the 80-point maximum.
A hand that was two cards from finished scores the same as a hand you never organised at all. This is why experienced players build the pure sequence first and everything else afterwards — until it exists, nothing else in your hand is worth anything.

Can you use a joker in a pure sequence?

The declaration is invalid and you are penalised the full point value of your hand, up to the maximum of 80 points. Every card counts against you, including the ones already arranged into valid groups.
Can a wild joker card be used in a pure sequence as its natural card?
Yes, but only if it completes the run naturally in the right suit and position. If the wild joker rank is 7 and you hold 5♠ 6♠ 7♠, that 7♠ is sitting in its own natural place, so most house rules count the run as pure. Confirm this with your table before you rely on it.
How many cards are in a pure sequence?
Three at minimum, but a pure sequence in Rummy can be longer. A four or five card run in one suit with no joker is still a pure sequence, and a longer one gives you more flexibility elsewhere in the hand.
Is Q-K-A a pure sequence in Rummy?
Yes, if all three are the same suit and no joker is involved. The ace works at the top of a run as well as the bottom, so A-2-3 and Q-K-A are both valid.
Can you have two pure sequences in Rummy?
Yes, and it is a strong position. You only need one, so a second pure sequence means the joker you were saving is free to complete a set instead.
What is the difference between a pure and impure sequence?
A pure sequence contains no joker of any kind. An impure sequence is the same run with a joker standing in for a missing card. Only the pure one satisfies the declaration requirement.
