रम्मी शब्दावली
Rummy glossary
Every word you will hear at an Indian Rummy table, what it means, and which ones actually decide rounds.
The four that matter most. A sequence is a run in one suit; a pure sequence is one with no joker in it and you cannot declare without one. A set is three or four of a rank in different suits. Deadwood is everything left ungrouped, and all of it counts against you.
The full list
| Term | Hindi | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Sequence | सीक्वेंस | Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. Also called a run. You need at least two of them to declare. |
| Pure sequence | प्योर सीक्वेंस | A sequence built with no joker anywhere in it. At least one is compulsory — without it your declaration is invalid however good the rest of the hand is. |
| Impure sequence | इंप्योर सीक्वेंस | The same consecutive run, but with a joker standing in for a missing card. Your second sequence is allowed to be impure. |
| Set | सेट | Three or four cards of the same rank in different suits. Jokers are allowed. Sets are optional once the sequence requirement is met. |
| Printed joker | प्रिंटेड जोकर | The joker cards that come in the deck. They substitute for any card in a set or an impure sequence, and count zero if left in hand. |
| Wild joker | वाइल्ड जोकर | A card turned face up at the start of the round. Every card of that rank, in all four suits, becomes wild for that round. |
| Declare | डिक्लेयर | Showing a finished hand for checking. You draw a fourteenth card, place one face down on the finish slot and reveal the thirteen. |
| Drop | ड्रॉप | Leaving the round voluntarily rather than playing it out. It costs a fixed penalty, but far less than being caught with a full hand. |
| Deadwood | डेडवुड | Cards left ungrouped when the round ends. Every one of them counts against you at face value. |
| Closed deck | क्लोज्ड डेक | The face-down pile you draw from blind. Nobody knows what you took. |
| Open deck | ओपन डेक | The face-up discard pile. Drawing from it tells every opponent exactly what you now hold. |
| Discard | डिस्कार्ड | The card you place face up at the end of your turn, returning your hand to thirteen. |
| Meld | मेल्ड | The act of arranging cards into valid sequences and sets. Nothing is laid on the table until you declare. |
| Toss | टॉस | The draw that decides who plays first. Usually a single card dealt to each player, highest going first. |
The three that cost people games
Pure sequence
Every other term on this list describes something optional. This one does not. A declaration without a pure sequence is invalid and costs your full hand value, so until it exists nothing else you have built is worth anything. See what counts as pure for the edge cases.
Drop
Most beginners never drop, and it costs them. Playing out a hopeless hand risks the full eighty points; dropping early costs a fixed fraction of that. Recognising a hand that is not going anywhere in the first few turns is a real skill, and dropping is not a failure.
Open deck
Drawing from the open pile is free information for everyone else. If you pick up the seven of hearts, every opponent now knows you are working on a run around it, and they will hold the cards you need. The closed deck tells them nothing. Take the open card only when it genuinely completes something.
Common questions
What does deadwood mean in Rummy?
Cards left ungrouped when the round ends. The Rummy glossary covers deadwood and the rest of the vocabulary. Each one counts against you at face value, with face cards and aces at ten.
What is a drop in Rummy?
Leaving the round voluntarily instead of playing it out — see Points, Pool and Deals Rummy for how the penalty differs by format. It carries a fixed penalty, but that penalty is much smaller than being caught holding a full hand of unmatched cards.
What is the difference between the closed and open deck in Rummy?
The closed deck is face down and drawing from it reveals nothing. The open deck is the face-up discard pile, so drawing from it tells everyone at the table exactly which card you took.
What is a wild joker in Rummy?
A card turned face up at the start of the round. Every card of that rank across all four suits becomes wild for that round, including any you are already holding.
Do jokers count as points in Rummy?
No. Jokers count zero if they are left in your hand when the round ends, which makes them the safest card to be caught with.
What does meld mean in Rummy?
Arranging your cards into valid sequences and sets. In Indian Rummy melds stay in your hand — nothing goes on the table until you declare.
