Soft and hard hands

The same total can be two completely different hands, depending on whether an ace is doing the work.

Soft means your hand holds an ace currently counting as eleven. Drawing a card cannot bust a soft hand — the ace just drops to one.

Hard means there is no flexible ace. Every card you draw carries full bust risk.

SOFT 17A6Draw a ten and the ace drops to one - still 17HARD 17107Draw a ten and you are on 27 - bust
Two hands showing seventeen. One cannot bust on the next card; the other almost certainly will.

Look at the last column. Two hands showing seventeen behave completely differently on the very next card — one is untouchable, the other is dead. That is the entire reason the distinction exists.

The moment soft becomes hard

A soft hand converts silently. Hold ace and six for a soft seventeen, draw an eight, and the ace drops to one — you are now on a hard fifteen, and the next card can bust you.

Nothing announces this. There is no flag on the table. The hand simply stops being safe, and players who were not tracking the ace keep drawing as though it were.

Two aces

Ace plus ace is a soft twelve, not a twenty-two. The first ace counts as eleven and the second immediately drops to one, because two elevens would already be over the limit. The same logic applies to any hand where a second ace arrives.

Why it matters

A soft hand is the one position in Blackjack where taking a card costs you nothing. Not "usually works out" — nothing, on that one card. You cannot bust, so the only possible outcomes are unchanged or improved.

This is also why dealer rules distinguish between the two. Most tables make the dealer stand on soft seventeen, and some make them draw. That single line in the house rules changes the game more than any other, because it decides whether the dealer gets a free card on roughly one hand in fifteen.

Common questions

What is a soft hand in Blackjack?

A hand holding an ace still counting as eleven — see soft and hard hands in Blackjack. It is called soft because drawing a card cannot bust it - the ace simply drops to one instead.

What is the difference between soft 17 and hard 17?

Soft 17 is ace plus six, where the ace counts as eleven. Hard 17 is any seventeen without a flexible ace, such as ten plus seven. Soft 17 cannot bust on the next card; hard 17 busts on anything above a four.

Can a soft hand bust in Blackjack?

Not on the next card. Once the ace has dropped to one the hand becomes hard, and from that point it can bust normally.

Why do soft hands matter in Blackjack?

Because they carry no immediate risk. A soft hand can always take one more card safely, which makes it the one situation where drawing costs you nothing.

What is a soft 18 in Blackjack?

An ace counting as eleven plus a seven. Like any soft hand it cannot bust on the next card - draw a ten and the ace drops to one, leaving you on eighteen again.

Is ace-ace a soft hand in Blackjack?

Yes, a soft twelve. The first ace counts as eleven and the second immediately counts as one, because two elevens would already exceed 21.

When does a soft hand become hard in Blackjack?

The moment the ace has to drop from eleven to one to keep you under 21. Nothing announces it - the hand simply stops being safe to draw to.
