Rummy points and scoring
Points count against you, so zero wins. Everything else is about how little you can be caught holding.
Scoring sits inside the wider Indian Rummy rules, and it decides when to stop playing a hand.

Rummy card values: face cards and aces count ten, number cards count their face value, jokers count zero.
The winner scores zero. Everyone else counts their ungrouped cards — face value, face cards and aces at ten, jokers at nothing.
One hand is capped at 80 points however bad it is.

The cap changes how a bad hand plays
Thirteen face cards would be 130 points. The cap makes it 80.
That has a practical consequence: once your hand is bad enough to hit the cap, it cannot get worse. Drawing a king when you are already holding 90 points of unmatched cards costs you nothing, which means a hopeless hand should be played for the outside chance rather than protected.
Dropping
You can leave a round voluntarily instead of playing it out, and it is usually the right call on a hand going nowhere.

Exact figures vary by table and by format — confirm them before you start. The principle does not vary: dropping early is cheap and beginners almost never do it.

An invalid declaration costs everything
That reading is the harshest rule in the game. Declare without meeting all four conditions of a valid Rummy declaration and you are scored on your entire hand — including every card you had arranged correctly.
A hand that was one card from perfect scores the same as a hand you never sorted. There is no partial credit and no appeal, which is why the pure sequence is worth checking twice before you place the finish card.
Zero is the target
Rummy scoring runs backwards from most games. You are not accumulating points; you are avoiding them. A valid declaration scores zero and zero is unbeatable.
Everything else — dropping, discarding high cards early, holding jokers — is about keeping the number small on the rounds you do not win.
The penalty range, worked out
Thirteen cards, each face card and ace worth ten, numbered cards at face value, and a cap of 80. The extremes are worth knowing before you decide whether to keep playing a hand.

A two-deck game holds 32 ten-point cards. Any eight of them in your hand reaches the cap, which means a face-card-heavy hand is already a maximum-penalty hand long before the round ends.
The point is the case for dropping. A first drop costs 20 against a possible 80, so dropping saves up to 60 points — and the decision costs nothing but the round.
