Teen Patti vs poker

Both deal a hand and bet on it. Almost everything after that is different, including which hands beat which.

The difference that surprises people: in Teen Patti a sequence beats a colour. In poker a flush beats a straight. The order is genuinely reversed, and it is not a house rule — it follows from hand size.

Why the ranking reverses

This is the one difference that is not arbitrary. Rankings follow rarity, and rarity depends on how many cards you hold.

With three cards drawn from 52 there are 1,096 possible colours and only 720 possible sequences. The sequence is harder to make, so it ranks higher.

With five cards the arithmetic flips: there are far more possible straights than flushes, so the flush wins. Same principle, opposite result, purely because of hand size.

The full count for all 22,100 three-card hands is on the Teen Patti probability page.

Blind and seen has no poker equivalent

In Teen Patti you may bet without looking at your cards, and it costs half what a player who has looked pays. That is not a gimmick — it is the central mechanism of the game.

A blind player sits in a hand for half the price of everyone else, which applies real pressure to players who have committed to knowing what they hold. Poker has no position like it: everyone sees their cards, and there is no discount for ignorance.

What poker has that Teen Patti does not

  • Community cards — shared cards mean everyone is building from partly the same information. Teen Patti hands are entirely private.
  • Multiple betting streets — poker reveals cards in stages, so a hand's value changes as it is played. A Teen Patti hand is fixed the moment it is dealt.
  • More hand types — full house and four of a kind need five cards. Three cards cannot form them.

Which is more skill

Poker, over a long session, simply because it contains more decisions. Four betting rounds and five shared cards create far more branches than one continuous round on three private cards.

That does not make Teen Patti a game of pure chance. The blind-or-seen choice, when to pack, and whether to request a sideshow are real decisions — there are just fewer of them, and they happen faster.

Common questions

Is Teen Patti harder than poker?

Teen Patti has fewer decisions, so it is quicker to learn. Poker has more betting rounds, community cards and hand types, which gives more room for skill to show over a session.

Why does a sequence beat a colour in Teen Patti but not in poker?

Because of hand size — the full count is on Teen Patti probability. In three cards there are 720 sequences and 1,096 colours, so the sequence is rarer. In five cards a flush is rarer than a straight, so the order reverses.

Can you bluff in Teen Patti?

Yes, and the blind and seen structure makes it distinctive. A blind player is bluffing without even knowing whether they are bluffing, which is a position poker has no equivalent of.

Is Teen Patti the same as Three Card Brag?

They are very close. Teen Patti descends from the British game Three Card Brag and shares the three-card hand and the blind and seen structure. Hand rankings and betting details differ in places.

How many hands are there in Teen Patti compared to poker?

Teen Patti has six: trail, pure sequence, sequence, colour, pair and high card. Poker has ten, because five cards allow combinations like full house and four of a kind that three cards cannot form.
